Here are our two featured games for this weekend:
Liverpool vs. Bournemouth
Bournemouth will have harrowing memories of last season’s trip to Merseyside, where Saturday’s opponents ran riot in a 9-0 demolition. The Cherries got their revenge in the reverse fixture, winning 1-0 at home, but they have lost on six of their seven previous trips to Anfield and are likely to be found wanting again.
Plenty has changed since that drubbing from the Reds, and a takeover in December has allowed them to inject some much-needed quality into the squad. The appointment of highly-rated Spanish tactician Andoni Iraola also shows some serious intent and a recruitment drive that suggests they could be on an upward trajectory.
A 1-1 draw with West Ham in their Premier League game is a respectable starting point under Iraola, but Liverpool will likely pose a much sterner test at their Anfield fortress. The Reds also drew their opening game 1-1 against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, where they were the better team in the first half but second best after the break.
However, Liverpool are a completely different proposition at their Anfield home, where they lost only one of their 19 league games last season. Leeds were the only team to upset Jurgen Klopp’s boys, whose list of victims included Manchester City, Manchester United, and Tottenham. With Luis Diaz back fit and healthy, Liverpool’s forward options are at full strength, with Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez, and Diogo Jota among the options.
Liverpool looks light in midfield, where they have lost a lot of experience, following the departures of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson. They have been trying hard to recruit a defensive protector. However, the array of attacking talent spells trouble for Bournemouth, and they will likely spend much of the game on the back foot. The hosts have scored three or more in seven of their last ten meetings with Bournemouth, and we expect that to continue here with a big win.
England Women vs. Spain Women
The Women’s World Cup final takes place on Sunday as England and Spain face off at the Olympic Stadium in Sydney. Both sides have endured tough routes through to the showpiece but were impressed in their semi-final assignments.
The Lionesses were dragged into extra time and penalties by Nigeria and then given a stern test by Colombia before an exceptional display in the last four saw them dump out co-hosts Australia 3-1. Spain suffered a 4-0 humbling at the hands of Japan in the group stages and needed extra time against the Netherlands before a 2-1 success in the semi-finals over a very good Sweden side.
These two teams look fairly well matched on paper, as England potentially have the better individual players, but Spain are an excellent unit. They played out a 1-1 draw in the quarter-finals of Euro 2022, with England going on to win on penalties before claiming the trophy, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see additional time needed on Sunday.
Goals seem to be the best, given the attacking quality both of these sides possess. Spain have hit 16 goals in this competition, and England have managed 13 of their own – and both have only failed to score in one of their fixtures. There have been goals at both ends in three of England’s last four and in each of Spain’s last three, and a repeat of last year’s 1-1 draw is a real possibility.
Lauren James could come back into the England side, but Serina Weigman has other options who have scored the goals while she served her suspension. One such player who will almost certainly be in the first XI is Lauren Hemp, after hitting three goals in the last four games for England. For Spain, 19-year-old Barcelona forward Salma Paralluelo scored in the last two rounds and could come back into the first XI for Sunday’s final. We expect both teams to score on Sunday with these attacking talents on display.
