Arsenal vs Brentford

Arsenal have been almost peerless in 2024, with convincingly emphatic wins in each of the league matches they have played this year. The only blemish on their record was the 1-0 loss at Porto in the first leg of their UCL Round of 16 tie. And while the return leg on Tuesday will feature heavily in Mikel Arteta’s thoughts, the Gunners have so much quality in their squad that it may not matter who is selected or not against Brentford.

Arteta’s men are scoring at will at the moment. Since the turn of the year, Arsenal have scored 31 league goals in the seven league games they have played. Twelve of those goals have come in three home games that have seen them dispatch Crystal Palace (5-0), Newcastle (4-1), and title rivals Liverpool (3-1). The Liverpool result could prove to be very important at the end of the season, with Arsenal in third place, just two points behind the Merseysiders who occupy top spot. And with Liverpool playing host to top of the table Manchester City on Sunday, Arteta and his men will be keen to pick up a win here that sees them go top of the table, at least for 24 hours until those two teams meet.

Thomas Frank’s Brentford team will understandably be wary of Arsenal’s recent form given their own recent tumble towards the relegation spots. Brentford are currently in 15th place on the log – three spots and six points above the bottom three after a rotten run of form that has seen them win just once in their last seven league games. Frank’s task is made even harder by a debilitating injury crisis that has claimed most of his backline. Key defenders Ben Mee, Ethan Pinnock, Rico Henry, and Aaron Hickey are all set to miss this clash, meaning that the Bees are stretched thin in defense. For a side that has already conceded 50 goals in their 27 league games this season, this game against the league’s in-form attack could not have come at a worse time.

Arsenal have already recorded two 5-0 and two 6-0 wins in the first two months of this year, and there is no indication that they are willing to slow down. Arteta’s side have even become very dangerous from set-pieces this season. They have scored 18 goals from set plays, which is more than any other side in the league. For a Brentford side that will be coming into this match with a makeshift defense, the writing is on the wall. Their away record against fellow London teams makes for even worse reading. They have suffered defeats in high-scoring games against West Ham, Crystal Palace, and Tottenham. We just cannot look beyond an Arsenal win, and there may be more value in selecting the home side to score over 1.5 goals.

Bournemouth vs Sheffield United

Bournemouth host bottom club Sheffield United at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday, and the Seasiders will see this game as a chance to improve on their poor home form in 2024 so far. Andoni Iraola has only been able to mastermind a single point from Bournemouth’s three home games so far this year. That point came in a disappointing 1-1 draw against Nottingham Forest, but the two defeats were from tough games against Liverpool and Manchester City.

Sheffield United will offer nothing close to those two super teams. They are having a season to forget with one abject performance followed by an even worse one. They were 5-0 down at halftime against Arsenal the last time out, eventually losing the game 6-0. Their shambolic defending in that game and indeed in many other previous games has been subject to heavy criticism on numerous occasions. Chris Wilder may have replaced the sacked Paul Heckingbottom, but he has not been able to find and plug the leak. Overall, the Blades have let in 72 goals in their 27 Premier League games so far. That tally means that they are comfortably placed as the Premier League side to have conceded the most goals this season.

Sheffield United’s troubles aren’t just in defense, though, they are also the team that has scored the fewest number of goals in the league this season. Bournemouth doesn’t have such problems, having scored 35 goals this season which sees them sit in a respectable 12th position on the log. A lot of that is down to the form of striker Dominic Solanke, whose 14 goals in the put him fourth in the league. That tally is more than Sheffield United’s top four goalscorers put together. Solanke will definitely see this as an opportunity to fill his boots against a team that looked like they have accepted their fate in that match against Arsenal.

We simply do not see how Wilder and his team can come back from that soul-crushing game against Arsenal. Their chances are further worsened by their away form this season. The Blades have just one win away from home all season, and that win was against fellow relegation candidates Luton Town last month. For us, a 21st loss of the season is the most likely result at the Vitality on Saturday. Bournemouth has failed to score in just one of their last six matches, and with Antoine Semenyo available upfront to partner the aforementioned Solanke, Bournemouth will score the goals to pick up a comfortable win here.
