Manchester City vs Everton
Manchester City have started the second half of the season in their usual whirlwind manner, relentlessly clawing back lost ground on their rivals in the title race, Liverpool and Arsenal. The Citizens are now level on points with Arsenal and are just two points behind Liverppol despite having played a game lesser than both teams.
Win against Everton in this early kickoff on Saturday and City will climb to the top of the table, at least until Liverpool plays later in the day. They have been victorious in their last nine games in all competitions, so City will be coming into this with a lot of confidence. In fact, Pep Guardiola’s men are unbeaten in their last fourteen matches on home turf, out of which they have won eleven. Overall, they have won 9 consecutive games in all competitions since a surprise home draw against Crystal Palace last year.
Everton were riding on a wave in the aftermath of their much-talked-about ten-point deduction. However, they have struggled for form in recent weeks, taking just three points from their last six matches. Unfortunately for the toffees, their dip in form has coincided with Luton’s improvement and they have now been dragged into one of the relegation places. They did show some fight in their last game, coming back twice to draw 2-2 against Tottenham.
This pair met in December, with City winning 3-1. And with the return of Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland from fairly lengthy absences, Guardiola and his boys will go into this knowing they have the attacking firepower to put Everton to the sword. Those two dangermen will be joined in attack by talents like Phil Foden, Bernardo Silva, and Julian Alvarez. Foden scored a hat-trick against Brentford the last time out, while Silva has scored 6 goals from 17 league starts in midfield, and Alvarez has scored thirteen times this season. City’s quality should see them win this fairly easily.
Liverpool vs Burnley
Liverpool fell to a 3-1 loss at title rivals Arsenal on Sunday, a defeat that has seen the gap between them and the chasing pack reduced to two points. However, they have the chance to respond quickly when they host 19th-place Burnley this Saturday.
Jurgen Klopp’s shock announcement that he would be stepping down at the end of the season seemed to have given the Liverpool squad a new found resolve. They crushed Norwich and Chelsea 5-2 and 4-1 in the FA Cup and Premier League respectively. The Chelsea win in particular seemed like a statement of intent in the title race, only for them to be completely dominated by Arsenal last Sunday. They will be eager to get back on track here at Anfield, where they have picked up 29 of their 51 points this season. Those 29 points have come from just eleven home games, meaning they have dropped just 4 points at home all season.
Burnley are the team looking to prevent Liverpool from bouncing back immediately on Saturday. Vincent Kompany’s men are 7 points off Luton in 17th place having played a game more, and their survival hopes are fading fast. Considering their form of late, things are not likely to get any better for them at Anfield on Saturday. Kompany’s men are winless in their last six league games, drawing two and losing the remaining four. Overall, they have won just three league games all season, and it is quite difficult to see how they will add to that meagre number here against Liverpool. Despite their struggles, Burnley still try to play football, and Kompany has shown that he is not one to set up his team purely to stifle opponents. This is why they have failed to score in only two of their last six games, finding the net in defeats to Aston Villa and Manchester City.
That commitment to an open and attacking style may just play into Liverpool’s hands. Going forward, Klopp’s men have scored 30 premier league goals at Anfield this season which comes up at an average of nearly three goals per game. Overall, they have scored 52 goals in their 23 league games. Mo Salah is unlikely to be fit for this, but Klopp will still be able to call on the likes of Diogo Jota, Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz, and Cody Gakpo. We simply cannot look beyond a comfortable home win in this fixture.
