Schalke vs Kaiserslautern

Schalke entertain Kaiserslautern at the Veltins-Arena on Saturday, still seeking their first points of the season in Bundesliga 2 following last year’s relegation. They looked as if they were destined for at least a point at Hamburg in their opener, but a sending-off for Ibrahima Cisse with 20 minutes remaining wrecked their chances.

The Royal Blues will be looking to bounce back against Kaiserslautern in this fixture. An immediate top-flight return will be Schalke’s target this season, and they can pick up their first points by beating Kaiserslautern on Saturday.

Thomas Reis’ men are a strong side, and they were close to getting something in that game against a strong Hamburg side. Their opponents this weekend just aren’t at that level. Dirk Schuster’s red devils lost at home to St Pauli in their opener and are now winless in seven games going back to last season, losing their last four.

Schalke may have been relegated last term, but they finished strongly with seven points from nine available at home. They have scored two or more goals in five of their last six competitive games, while Kaiserslautern failed to score in seven of their last eight Bundesliga 2 games last season. That terrible run at the end resulted in Sunday’s away side finishing the season in midtable, and there has been little or no evidence over the summer to show that this season will be different.

Teenage winger Assan Ouedraogo marked his senior Schalke debut with a goal last weekend and the 17-year-old put in an impressive performance all around. As such, he looks a good contender to make it goals in back-to-back games for his side with an anytime goal on Saturday. Along with the quality of more experienced frontmen like Sebastian Polter and Kenan Karaman, we feel that Schalke will have too much for the visitors and should record a comfortable win.

Kilmarnock vs Rangers

Rangers begins their Premiership campaign away at Rugby Park on Saturday as they make the trip to Kilmarnock for the late kick-off. This will be the Ibrox giants’ first outing of the new season, but Killie have had a chance to get up to speed as they have already played four League Cup games, out of which they won three and drew one.

Killie finished third from bottom last season, only six points clear of the bottom two. Having only gained promotion to the Premiership in 2022, it could be argued that their main aim last season was to stave off relegation. They managed to achieve that goal, but this season will be all about establishing stability and consistency, and they will be looking to start by overturning Rangers.

However, Michael Beale’s men have won each of the last six meetings between these two sides and should be expected to claim the three points in this fixture. They have scored exactly three goals in their last two games against these opponents and hit eight goals across their last three games at the end of the previous campaign.

The Gers finished seven points shy of champions Celtic last season, and they have quickly set out to close that gap by splurging on Danilo, Cyriel Dessers, Sam Lammers, and Abdallah Sima over the summer. The firepower they have assembled should be too much for most SPL sides, including a Kilmarnock side who are only starting their second season back in the top flight.

Even before stocking up on the aforementioned forwards, Rangers have always had goal threats across the squad. Todd Cantwell ended last season with four goals in five games. James Tavernier is another one, and he struck three times in pre-season and will be on spot-kick duties for the visitors. We believe Rangers have the goals in their squad to record an easy win here.
